The origin and development of disposable gloves

1. History of the origin of disposable gloves
In 1889, the first pair of disposable gloves was born in the office of Dr. William Stewart Halstead.
Disposable gloves were popular among surgeons because they not only ensured the surgeon's dexterity during surgery, but also greatly improved the hygiene and cleanliness of the medical environment.
In long-term clinical trials, disposable gloves were also found to isolate blood-borne diseases, and when the AIDS outbreak occurred in 1992, OSHA added disposable gloves to the list of personal protective equipment.

2. Sterilization
Disposable gloves were born in the medical industry, and the sterilization requirements for medical gloves are stringent, with the following two common sterilization techniques.
1) Ethylene oxide sterilization - the use of medical sterilization of ethylene oxide sterilization technology, which can kill all microorganisms, including bacterial spores, but also to ensure that the elasticity of the glove is not damaged.
2) Gamma sterilization - radiation sterilization is an effective method of using electromagnetic radiation generated by electromagnetic waves to kill microorganisms on most substances, inhibit or kill microorganisms thereby achieving a high degree of sterilization, after gamma sterilization of gloves are generally a slight gray color.

3. Classification of disposable gloves
As some people are allergic to natural latex, glove manufacturers are constantly giving a variety of solutions, resulting in the derivation of a variety of disposable gloves.
Distinguished by material, they can be divided into: nitrile gloves, latex gloves, PVC gloves, PE gloves ...... From the market trend, nitrile gloves are gradually becoming mainstream.
4. Powdered gloves and non-powdered gloves
The main raw material of disposable gloves is natural rubber, stretchy and skin-friendly, but difficult to wear.
Around the end of the 19th century, manufacturers added talcum powder or lithopone spore powder to glove machines to make gloves easier to peel off from hand molds and also solve the problem of difficult donning, but these two powders can cause post-operative infections.
In 1947, a food-grade powder that was easily absorbed by the body replaced talc and lithospermum spore powder and was used in large quantities.
As the advantages of disposable gloves were gradually explored, the application environment was extended to food processing, spraying, clean room and other fields, and powder-free gloves became increasingly popular. At the same time, the FDA agency in order to avoid having powdered gloves to certain medical conditions bring medical risks, the United States has banned the use of powdered gloves in the medical industry.
5. Removal of powder using chlorine wash or polymer coating
So far, most of the gloves peeled from the glove machine are powdered, and there are two main ways to remove powder.
1) Chlorine wash
Chlorine washing generally uses a solution of chlorine gas or sodium hypochlorite and hydrochloric acid to clean the gloves to reduce the powder content, and also to reduce the adhesion of the natural latex surface, making the gloves easy to wear. It is worth mentioning that chlorine washing can also reduce the natural latex content of gloves and reduce allergy rates.
Chlorine wash powder removal is mainly used for latex gloves.
2) Polymer coating
Polymer coatings are applied to the inside of gloves with polymers such as silicones, acrylic resins and gels to cover the powder and also make the gloves easy to wear. This approach is commonly used for nitrile gloves.
6. Gloves need a linen design
To ensure that the grip of the hand is not affected when wearing gloves, the design of the hemp surface of the glove surface is very important:.
(1) palm surface slightly hemp - to provide the user's grip, reduce the chance of error when operating machinery.
(2) fingertip hemp surface - to enhance fingertip sensitivity, even for small tools, still be able to maintain good control ability.
(3) Diamond texture - to provide excellent wet and dry grip to ensure operational safety.
